Two Sisters Jewelry - Viking Knitting
“Viking Knitting” refers to an ancient technique of circular wire weaving that forms a loop and then is stretched. It’s not knitting the way we usually think of it (using two needles) but actually entails weaving sculptural chains from fine-gauge metal wire. Finished Viking knit chains do, however, look like tubes of knitted wire.
Archeologists found examples of this type of chain at various sites in Scandinavia dating from the Seventh Century AD, which is the Viking Era. Chains were found in treasure troves in Scandinavia. Made from melted down coins turned into fine wire, these chains were formed using a loop in loop technique. Basically, the Vikings literally wore their treasure! Delicate or chunky (depending on the size wire used), these chains could be used in a variety of types of necklaces and bracelets.
Centuries later, the art and beauty of Viking Knitting lives on at Fra Angelica Studio through the work of Two Sisters Jewelry. They use 26 gauge wire and weave chains, similar to a knitting technique called “I-cord”, around wooden dowels. After knitting, they pull the raw chains through holes of various sizes in wooden drawplates to tighten the weaves and make the chains pliable. Then they finish the ends of each chain by hand coiling a heavier gauge wire and make them into bracelets and necklaces by attaching the woven wire to Bali silver end caps and a clasp. While it is a time consuming and labor intensive process, the end beauty of their designs seems to make it all worth it.
Two Sisters Jewelry Artist Statement
What do Two Sisters who lead very different lives do to connect? Design and create jewelry of course! What began from attending a Viking knitting class at Three Pine Studio in Cross Village Michigan, turned into a small business. Then came a request from Linda Damiani of the Fra Angelica Studio to create pieces using the Viking technique, and the rest was history. Our work is a reflection of the handwork tradition passed down from our grandmother and mother. Our pieces are often a combination of our work and embellishments created by other artists as a way of supporting their craft and enhancing our creations.
